"I am very confident, I think, that China is ready to take this step."

The move comes as China intensifies its growing military presence in the East China Sea, with its biggest naval deployment, known as Lianyongang, and its sixth military base, called Dalian.

Xi has repeatedly called for China to take a "new and more responsible" role in the East China Sea dispute but China's leaders have refused to commit to an immediate military response to maritime disputes.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei on Wednesday said that the government's decision to allow Chinese-made aircraft to use airfields was a "fair resolution" to the dispute. China and Malaysia say the aircraft use in the area of artificial islands is a violation of their sovereignty.

"We have been warning to all sides and it seems to be working," Hong said. "China will be ready to take the lead and will be ready to take the necessary measures to end the air operation."
